We took a sushi making class on our last morning i We took a sushi making class on our last morning in Tokyo. Some of us were better at it than others.

Also a view of the Tokyo Tower. A highlight from Mater’s Tall Tales. #tokyomater #carsmovie #materstalltales

Before heading back to Tokyo, we stored our luggag Before heading back to Tokyo, we stored our luggage at the Kyoto station and took the train to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. The crowds were intense so we tried to head out of town to walk along to river with less people! A challenge anywhere we went in Kyoto!

So the signs said not to feed the deer in Nara Par So the signs said not to feed the deer in Nara Park, but they were selling crackers to do just that.

We watched as many terrified children ran away from these deer, who nipped at them demanding more crackers.

The lesson here is to maybe DON’T feed the deer. They don’t really “bow” as they say they do, it is more of a “begging” action or a “head butt”.

I can’t say I’m loving the animal “exhibits” in Japan. Between this, the animal cafes, and the monkey “hike”… not impressed.

On a trip to Nara, we attempted to hike the Yamano On a trip to Nara, we attempted to hike the Yamanobe no Michi Trail but we couldn’t find it. Once you got too far out of town, nothing was in English. All just Japanese characters. It was hot though, and we were all tired, so we didn’t put too much effort into tracking it down. Maybe you will have better luck!

We settled for roosters. And a Japanese cover band of the Beatles.

This trip was covered by the JR pass but you have to pay a tourist tax. Which involves yet another ticket. Just make sure it is the right color ticket. Sigh.

We went to Osaka on the #shinkansen for the #expo2 We went to Osaka on the #shinkansen for the #expo2025osaka (The World Fair). We had never really heard of this event before. The last time it was on US soil was in the 1980s.

Osaka built a huge wooden structure encircling all the country exhibits. The lines were long for many of the more “popular” countries so we didn’t bother waiting, but did see many we knew nothing about.

My favorite was #turkmenistan🇹🇲❤️ and their love for dogs. We are also sold on #slovakia for our next travel destination.

The passport stamp concept brought out Greg’s competitive side ;)

We have found some interesting food options in Kyo We have found some interesting food options in Kyoto at #nishikimarket Our favorite was the candy coated baby octopus with the “unexpected quail egg surprise”! (No thank you!) As weird as the food options were, it did appear to be 1000 times more sanitary than the ones we found in Hong Kong.

Then an evening stroll at the Fushimi Inari Shrine (or the Thousand Torii Gates)

Get Inspired

Traveling with your kids doesn't have to be hard, you just have to get a little creative. Where do THEY want to go next? How do you all want to travel there? Brainstorming is oftentimes the best part. Have your kids find a picture in a magazine of a place that inspires them and just go for it. Unless it is San Bernadino. My kids always pick San Bernadino.
